What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) logs a communication fault between itself and the brake control module (BCM) and keeps the code there. Although the code is titled lost communication with the vehicle security control module, it concerns communication between the engine control module and the brake control module. The code has no separate troubleshooting.
Possible causes
- Break in one of the CAN wires
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the central electronics control module and other affected control modules and fix them first. Do not clear this code until they are fixed and cleared
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the CAN connectors between the engine control module and the brake control module for oxidation and loose contacts
- 4Look for chafed CAN wires. Use a multimeter to check that they have no break or short circuit to each other
- 5Do not work on the braking system yourself. If the fault returns: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the brake control module and the CAN network
