What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares its own configuration ID with the ID that the central electronics control module (CEM) sends out on the CAN network. The code is set when the IDs do not match, and also when communication with the CEM is or has been interrupted. Although the code is titled internal software incompatibility, it concerns a configuration ID that does not match the CEM.
Possible causes
- Wrong configuration ID because the module is not intended for the car, for example a used module with different software or hardware
- Break in the CAN wires between the engine control module and the CEM
- Intermittent breaks on one or both CAN wires
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the central electronics control module and other control modules, and fix communication faults first
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the CAN connectors for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Look for chafed CAN wires. Use a multimeter to check that they have no break or short to ground or supply voltage
- 5If the module was recently replaced: have a workshop check that it is intended for this car and has the correct software and configuration
Symptoms you may notice5
- The cruise control does not work at all
- The engine jerks on throttle and sharply after engine braking
- Uneven idle
- The engine does not start
- The general warning lamp is on
What the fault can affect2
- The module shuts off from the CAN network (bus-off) and stops sending messages
- The module's functions stop working
