What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks its configuration ID against the signal configuration broadcast by the central electronics control module (CEM) on CAN. Although the code is titled general checksum failure, it concerns a configuration ID that differs from the one the CEM sends.
Possible causes
- Wrong configuration ID because the module is not intended for the car, for example a used module with different software or hardware
- Break in the CAN wires between the module and the CEM
What you can do
- 1Check that the module is intended for this specific car, especially if it is used or has recently been replaced
- 2Check the CAN wires between the module and the central electronics control module for chafing and loose contacts
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no break or short to ground or supply voltage
- 4Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the configuration and reprogram the module if needed
Symptoms you may notice2
- The cruise control does not engage
- Red warning symbol and text message in the display
What the fault can affect2
- The module shuts off from the CAN network (bus-off)
- The module still responds to diagnostic commands
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
