What does this fault code mean?
The ECM works out a checksum for its own software and sends it to the central electronics control module (CEM). The code is set when the checksum does not match the one stored in the CEM, or when CAN communication fails. Although the code is titled software incompatibility with the body control module, it concerns the ECM software and its communication with the CEM.
Possible causes
- One or more codes stored in the central electronics control module (CEM)
- Disturbances or breaks on the CAN network
- Faulty or incomplete software in the engine control module, for example after a failed download
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Short circuit or break on one of the CAN wires
- A control module that is not intended for this car is fitted in the system
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the central electronics control module first and fix them. Then clear the code in the engine control module
- 2Check that the battery is well charged and that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the CAN connectors for contact resistance and oxidation, and use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no break or short circuit
- 4If any control module has been replaced recently: check that it is intended for this specific car
- 5Have a workshop confirm that the ECM software is correct and reload it if needed
