What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) receives brake pedal status from the brake control module (BCM) over CAN, including from a cancel switch fitted to cars with adaptive cruise control. The code is set when the signal from that cancel switch is judged to be faulty. The code can also be set during a CAN communication fault, in which case it appears together with other codes. Although the code is titled brake pedal switch circuit, it concerns the cancel switch.

    Possible causes

    • Fault in the brake control module (BCM), which should be checked first
    • Fault on the CAN network

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the codes in the brake control module and the engine control module. Troubleshoot the CAN-related codes first
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact
    3. 3Check the CAN connectors between the engine control module and the brake control module for oxidation and loose contacts
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no break or short to ground or supply voltage
    5. 5Do not work on the braking system yourself. If it returns: have a workshop check the brake module and the cancel switch

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The cruise control does not engage

    What the fault can affect1

    • The cruise control is switched off while the fault is active

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
