What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) sends information about the brake pedal position and status to the engine control module (ECM) over CAN. The code is set when the ECM receives no communication from the BCM. The cruise control is disengaged while the fault is active. After the ECM has been recharged or the battery has been disconnected, press the brake pedal down twice within about two seconds to activate cruise control.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the communication cable
- Communication cable short-circuited to ground
- Communication cable short-circuited to supply voltage
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the connections
- Short-circuit in the connections
What you can do
- 1Read the engine control module codes. If any of ECM-U012088, ECM-U000188, ECM-U1A1400, ECM-U000108 or ECM-U000100 is stored, check it first.
- 2Read the BCM codes. If the BCM has its own code, remedy it first, as the engine control module code is then a follow-on fault.
- 3Look for loose, chafed or corroded connectors and wiring in the communication between the engine control module and the BCM.
- 4With a multimeter you can check that the communication cable is not broken and has no contact with ground (the body) or battery voltage.
- 5Do not work on the brake system yourself. Have a workshop check the BCM if the fault remains after the checks above.
Symptoms you may notice1
- Cruise control does not engage
What the fault can affect1
- Cruise control is disengaged while the fault is active
