What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) sends requests for extra wheel torque to the engine control module (ECM) over CAN. Although the fault is named a sequence counter that is incorrect or not updated, it is set when the signal with the request for extra wheel torque is missing. If the BCM has stored a fault of its own, that is the root cause, and the ECM code is a subsequent fault to be remedied after the BCM fault.
Possible causes
- The fault is in the brake control module (BCM)
- Open circuit in one of the cables in the CAN network
- Short-circuit between the cables in the CAN network
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the engine control module codes. If any of ECM-U012088, ECM-U000188, ECM-U1A1400, ECM-U000108 or ECM-U000100 is stored, check it first.
- 2Read the fault codes in the brake control module (BCM) and remedy any faults there. The code in the engine control module is then most likely a subsequent fault.
- 3Look for loose, chafed or corroded connectors and wiring in the CAN network between the BCM and the engine control module.
- 4Do not work on the brake system yourself. Have a workshop check the BCM and the CAN network if the code returns.
