What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) continuously gets information from the CEM over CAN. The code is set if the communication is incorrect or missing, or if the immobilizer codes in the ECM and CEM cannot be read out or do not match. Before the engine is allowed to start, the codes are checked to ensure that they match.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Open circuit in one of the CAN network cables
- One of the CAN network cables is short-circuited to ground, to voltage or to another cable
- Incorrect immobilizer code in the engine control module (ECM) or the central electronic module (CEM)
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
- A module from a different vehicle has been fitted
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the CEM and remedy any faults there first. Erase the code only after the CEM and other affected modules are fixed.
- 2Check that the connectors in the CAN network are secure and clean. Gently wiggle the wiring and connectors to see whether the fault appears.
- 3Has the engine control module or the CEM been replaced recently? Programmed modules cannot be moved between vehicles, so tell the workshop.
- 4Have a workshop check the immobilizer codes. After repair, reconnect parts, switch the ignition on and start the engine.

- The engine does not start, either always or sometimes
- The starter motor turns but the engine does not start
- The starter motor does not turn and no clicking sound is heard at a start attempt
- Warning symbol and message in the display
