What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) controls the alternator's charge voltage over LIN, on request from the central electronic module (CEM) sent over CAN. The code is set when the ECM detects a disturbance in communication with the alternator control module (ACM). Although the fault is named a starter/generator control module, it concerns the communication between the ECM and the ACM.
Possible causes
- Increased contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals
- Short-circuit between the LIN cables
- Open circuit in one of the LIN cables
- Damaged alternator control module (ACM), which is the charge regulator
- An alternator with a charge regulator not intended for LIN communication has been fitted
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the LIN network
What you can do
- 1Look for loose, corroded or oxidized connectors at the alternator control module (ACM).
- 2With a multimeter you can check that the signal wire between the modules is not broken and has no contact with ground or voltage.
- 3Check that the alternator is of the correct type, as an alternator not intended for LIN communication causes this code.
- 4Have a workshop read the fault codes with diagnostic equipment and run the CEM quick test for the alternator, as this needs tools.
