What does this fault code mean?
At start-up the engine control module (ECM) initialises its own software and compares its configuration ID with the signal configuration sent by the central electronic module (CEM). The code is set if the initialisation fails, if the configuration IDs do not match, or if communication between the ECM and the CEM has been interrupted.
Possible causes
- Software error in the control module
- Internal fault in the ECM
- An incorrect CAN configuration ID, because the module is not intended for the car, for example a used module with different software or hardware
- Open circuit in the CAN wiring between the ECM and the CEM
What you can do
- 1If a used control module has been fitted or the engine control module has been replaced recently, tell the workshop. The module must be intended for this car.
- 2Read the fault codes in the CEM. The CEM monitors the voltage on the CAN wires and can set its own codes for short-circuits to ground or voltage.
- 3Look for loose, chafed or corroded connectors and wiring between the ECM and the CEM. Gently wiggle them to see whether the fault appears.
- 4Do not replace the CEM for a CAN fault unless a workshop has confirmed an internal fault. Have a workshop check whether the software needs reloading.
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine does not start, either always or sometimes
- The automatic gearbox gives no forward or reverse movement in the selected gear
