What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) receives the vehicle speed from the brake control module (BCM) over CAN. The code is set when an expected message from the BCM is missing. The fault may lie in the CAN connections, in the wiring, or in either of the two control modules.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the CAN connections
- Open circuit in one or both CAN cables
- One or both signal cables are short-circuited to ground, to voltage or to each other
- Damaged brake control module (BCM)
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the engine control module. If any of ECM-U012088, ECM-U000188, ECM-U1A1400, ECM-U000108 or ECM-U000100 is stored, investigate it first.
- 2Read the fault codes in the brake control module (BCM). Any communication faults there should be investigated first, as this code is then a follow-on fault.
- 3Check that the connectors in the CAN network between the BCM and the engine control module are secure and clean, and look for chafed wiring.
- 4Do not work on the brake system yourself. Have a workshop check the BCM if the code returns.
Symptoms you may notice1
- The check engine lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- The BCM's speed signal is replaced by a substitute value
