What does this fault code mean?
If the brake control module (BCM) detects a fault on the speed signal, it sends a fault message to the engine control module (ECM), which then sets its own code. Although the fault is named a sequence counter problem, it concerns a fault that the BCM has detected on the speed signal. A matching code for the wheel speed sensor signal is also stored in the BCM.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the CAN connections
- Open circuit in one or both CAN cables
- One or both signal cables are short-circuited to ground, to voltage or to each other
- Damaged brake control module (BCM)
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the engine control module. If any of ECM-U012088, ECM-U000188, ECM-U1A1400, ECM-U000108 or ECM-U000100 is stored, investigate it first.
- 2Read the fault codes in the brake control module (BCM) and troubleshoot the speed sensor signal there first. The engine control module code is then a follow-on fault.
- 3Check that the connectors in the CAN network are secure and clean, and look for chafed wiring.
- 4Do not work on the brake system yourself. Have a workshop check the BCM and the speed sensor if the code returns.
Symptoms you may notice1
- The check engine lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- The BCM's speed signal is replaced by a substitute value
