What does this fault code mean?
The ECM gets the vehicle configuration from the central electronic module (CEM) over CAN. The code is set when the signal is missing or incorrect, or when the configuration from the CEM does not match the one stored in the ECM. The code may be caused by a control module from another vehicle having been fitted.
Possible causes
- The central electronic module (CEM) is not intended for the car, for example a used module with different software or hardware
- A control module from another vehicle has been fitted
- Fault in the central electronic module (CEM)

What you can do
- 1Tell the workshop if a used control module or a control module from another vehicle has been fitted. The modules must be intended for this car.
- 2Read the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM) and remedy them there first. Do not replace the CEM for a CAN fault unless troubleshooting shows an internal fault.
- 3Check that the connectors in the CAN network are secure and clean. Gently wiggle wires and connectors to see whether the fault appears.
- 4Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the configuration in the CEM and the engine control module, as this needs tools.
