What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) continuously receives the information it needs from the forward sensing module (FSM) over CAN and checks the communication. The code is set when communication with the FSM is lost. Although the fault is named a distance sensor problem, it concerns communication with the FSM. After the ECM has been reloaded or the battery has been disconnected, the brake pedal must be pressed for roughly two seconds, with the engine running, before cruise control can be switched on.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the communication cable
- Communication cable short-circuited to ground
- Communication cable short-circuited to supply voltage
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the connections
- Short-circuit in the connections
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the engine control module, the FSM and the CEM. Remedy the FSM faults first, since the engine control module code is then a follow-on fault.
- 2Check that the connectors on the CAN network are secure and clean. Look for chafed wiring and gently wiggle the connectors to see whether the fault appears.
- 3If the fault returns, have a workshop measure on the CAN network with diagnostic equipment, as this requires measurement.
- 4Do not replace the CEM for a CAN fault unless a workshop has confirmed an internal fault in it.
Symptoms you may notice1
- Cruise control cannot be engaged
What the fault can affect1
- Cruise control is turned off while the fault is active
