What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the signals from the control modules it communicates with, and checks its own internal signals. Although the fault is named improper shutdown, the code concerns internal checks that give unacceptable results, including after the engine has been switched off. When the code is set, the ECM restarts, which may make the cabin light flicker and the instrument lighting go off briefly.
Possible causes
- Internal fault in the ECM
- A sequential fault linked to the throttle, so troubleshooting is done from another fault code
- Poorly charged battery or corroded connecting cables
- Faulty software in the ECM
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check the battery and its connections, and the engine control module connector, for contact resistance, play and oxidation.
- 2Read the fault codes in the engine control module. If a throttle-related fault code is stored, troubleshoot it first, as this code may be a follow-on fault.
- 3Have a workshop reload the engine control module software to make sure it is correct, as this requires programming.
- 4If the fault returns, the engine control module needs replacing, which is a workshop task.
Symptoms you may notice5
- Instrument lighting or the dimmer does not work
- Passenger compartment lighting does not work
- Warning symbol and message in the display
- Poor performance, the car lacks power
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly, sometimes or during acceleration
What the fault can affect3
- The maximum vehicle speed is limited
- A service request appears in the instrument panel display
- Driving performance is limited if the fault persists for a long time
