What does this fault code mean?
The control module receives a faulty signal from the throttle position sensor, which shows the throttle position. The fault may be a defective sensor, a faulty signal from the idle air control valve, or contact resistance, an open circuit or a short-circuit in the wiring.
Possible causes
- Defective throttle position (TP) sensor
- Throttle position sensor signal wire short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- The idle air control (IAC) valve gives a faulty ON signal
- Idle air control valve signal wire short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- Contact resistance
What you can do
- 1Check the connectors to the throttle position sensor and the control module for contact resistance and oxidation, and remedy them.
- 2Switch the ignition off before disconnecting the connectors. Then look for loose connectors and chafed wiring.
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the throttle position sensor voltage in live data while the accelerator is pressed and released.
- 4If no fault is found in the wiring, the throttle position sensor needs replacing. Have a workshop do the replacement.
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up
- Poor performance
What the fault can affect2
- The engine runs on a rich fuel and air mixture
- Idle control is not damped
