This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine speed sensor sends a pulsed signal to the control module as the engine turns. The code is set when the sensor's output voltage stops varying for a set time, so the control module receives no pulsed signal. The fault may be a defective sensor, a short-circuit or open circuit in the signal wire, or contact resistance, and the engine may not start.
Possible causes
- Defective engine speed (RPM) sensor
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Contact resistance
What you can do
- 1Check the connectors to the sensor and the control module for contact resistance and oxidation, and remedy whatever you find.
- 2With a diagnostic tool, crank the engine and watch the engine speed in live data. If it does not change at all during cranking, the signal is missing.
- 3With a multimeter, check that the signal wire from the sensor is not broken or short-circuited to ground or voltage.
- 4If no fault is found in the wiring, the sensor needs replacing. Have a workshop do the replacement.
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up
- The engine does not start
What the fault can affect1
- The control module works from the conditions recorded before the code was set
