What does this fault code mean?
Intake air is judged abnormal because the control module receives a signal indicating that the air volume is too large. The cause lies in the control of the idle speed or in the air bypass valve with its wiring. The fault lights the malfunction indicator lamp.
Possible causes
- The idle air control is defective
- Short to earth or to a live supply in the idle air control wiring
- Open circuit in the idle air control circuit
- Defective air bypass valve
- Short circuit in the air bypass valve circuit
What you can do
- 1Activate the air bypass valve with diagnostic equipment and listen for a click from both solenoids
- 2Check the connectors at the air bypass valve and the control module, and remedy any play or oxidation
- 3With diagnostic equipment: read the idle air control motor value with all electrical equipment off and confirm that it rises when the A/C is switched on
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wiring from the idle valve to the control module is continuous and not shorted to earth
- 5After the repair, read the fault codes again to confirm the fault has been cleared
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) comes on
What the fault can affect1
- The engine may run lean, because the air volume does not match the airflow and throttle position sensor signals
