EFI-0089
VOLVO
EFI-0089 - Fuel system. Faulty fuel pressure
System
Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
What does this fault code mean?
Although the fault is named fuel pressure, the condition concerns the fuel trim at idle. The code is set when the fuel adjustment stays too high or too low at idle for a sustained period. The cause may be the intake air temperature, atmospheric pressure or air flow sensor, or the high-pressure fuel pump.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance at the connections
- The intake air temperature sensor is defective, or its circuit is open or shorted
- The atmospheric pressure sensor is defective, or its circuit is open or shorted
- The volume air flow sensor is defective, or its circuit is open or shorted
- The high-pressure fuel pump is defective
What you can do
- 1If you have diagnostic equipment: read the intake air and atmospheric pressure values in live data with the ignition on, and check that they look reasonable
- 2Check the connectors at the air temperature sensor, the atmospheric pressure sensor, the air flow sensor and the control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wiring to the three sensors has no break and is not shorted to earth or supply voltage
- 4If you have diagnostic equipment: start the engine, let it warm up at idle, and check that the air flow sensor value follows engine speed
- 5If no fault is found in the wiring, replace the air flow sensor and check that the fault code does not return
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop replace the high-pressure fuel pump
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) comes on
- Reduced performance
What the fault can affect1
- There are no substitute values for the sensors, so the control module cannot switch to a fallback value
