What does this fault code mean?
The power steering module monitors the power supply to it. The fault shows that the voltage is too low. On vehicles built in 2003 to 2004 the code can sometimes be set without a fault in the supply, and then it can simply be cleared if there are no symptoms.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals
- Open circuit in the power supply
- Power supply shorted to earth
What you can do
- 1Check the power supply and the earth point to the power steering module: they should be secure and clean
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the supply wire to the module has no break and is not shorted to earth
- 3On vehicles built in 2003 to 2004: if there are no fault symptoms, the code can be cleared straight away
- 4Power steering affects how easily the car can be steered, so have a workshop fix the fault soon if the symptoms remain
Symptoms you may notice3
- No or weak power steering assistance
- General warning lamp is lit
- A message appears in the display
What the fault can affect1
- No power steering assistance
