What does this fault code mean?
Modules in the car exchange data all the time over the CAN network. The fault code is set when the power steering detects faulty CAN communication. The control module then shuts off, and the power steering remains disabled until the supply voltage is interrupted.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Open circuit in one of the CAN network cables
- One of the CAN network cables is shorted to earth
- One of the CAN network cables is shorted to supply voltage
- The CAN network cables are shorted to each other
What you can do
- 1Read all the fault codes in the car and note them, since several codes can be present together with CAN faults
- 2Check that the connectors to the power steering module and to the other modules on the CAN network are secure and free from oxidation
- 3Have a workshop measure the resistance of the CAN network, since this requires several control modules to be disconnected
- 4Steering is affected by the fault, so have a workshop fix it soon

- Other steering or handling problems
- Yellow warning symbol and a text message in the display
What the fault can affect3
- The power steering remains disabled until the supply voltage is interrupted
- The pump motor may run at a constant speed
- The power steering makes new attempts to communicate when the power is reconnected
