ICM-E001 - Control module communication. Faulty communication
System
Infotainment Control Module (ICM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C30 Electric (2011–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The infotainment control module (ICM) has detected serious interference on the low-speed CAN network, so CAN communication is blocked. The cause may be a short or break in the CAN wiring, or an internal fault in a module. The affected module switches itself off until its power is cut.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the control module
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact and that the battery is in good condition, since low voltage can cause communication faults
- 2With a diagnostic tool, read the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM). It monitors the CAN wires and can flag a short to earth or supply
- 3Check that the connectors on the CAN network are firmly seated and free from oxidation, and look for chafed cables
- 4Disconnect the battery negative terminal for a while and reconnect it. Modules that have gone into limp-home mode then return to normal operation
- 5If the fault remains, a workshop should measure the CAN network and find the module sending faulty messages. That module must be replaced
Symptoms you may notice2
- Steering wheel radio controls do not respond
- Steering wheel navigation controls do not respond
What the fault can affect2
- The control module switches itself off (bus-off)
- It stays off until the power supply is cut, and it tries to communicate again when power is restored
