Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
9 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
ICM gets the data it needs from the steering angle sensor (SAS) over CAN and keeps watch on that link. The code is set when communication with the SAS stops. The causes are a break, a short to earth or supply in the communication wire, or poor contact at the terminals.
Possible causes
- Break in the communication line to the steering angle sensor
- Communication line shorted to earth
- Communication line shorted to supply
- Poor contact, oxidation or an open connection in the terminals
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the other modules. If several modules show lost-communication codes, work through them first, starting with the central electronic module (CEM)
- 2Check the CAN connectors leading to the steering angle sensor for oxidation, loose connections and chafing
- 3Clear the fault code and test-drive the car to see whether it returns
- 4Do not work on the steering angle sensor or the steering system yourself. If the fault remains, have a workshop check the sensor and its wiring
Symptoms you may notice1
- A text message and a warning symbol appear in the display
