Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
9 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The head unit (IHU) and the Forward Sensing Module (FSM) should exchange information over the CAN network. The code is stored when communication with the FSM is disturbed or missing. The fault points to the CAN network rather than to one individual module.
Possible causes
- The Forward Sensing Module (FSM) receives no power supply
- A break in the ground wire to the FSM
- Contact resistance in the connections
- A break or short-circuit in the CAN wires
- A shared fault on the CAN network, if several fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM) point to communication faults with other modules on MS-CAN
- Faulty communication on HS-CAN, if the CEM has set fault codes for it
What you can do
- 1Clear the code and check whether it returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact
- 3Check that the connectors to the FSM and in the CAN network are firmly seated and free from oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: check whether the central electronic module (CEM) also has fault codes for communication faults, as this can point to a fault on the CAN network
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the power supply and ground wire to the FSM and the CAN wires
Symptoms you may notice2
