KVM-0021 - Switch unlocking right front. Signal missing
System
Keyless Vehicle Module (KVM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C30 Electric (2011–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The keyless vehicle module (KVM) compares the signals from the switch in the door handle and the switch in the lock cylinder on the right front door. The fault code is stored when the lock cylinder switch is activated before the handle switch has registered. Even though the code is named signal missing, the switch in the door handle is the suspect, so unlocking of the door can be slow.
Possible causes
- The right front door handle switch is faulty
- Open circuit in the wiring between the module and the right front handle switch
- The signal wire has a short to ground
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it, then pull the right front handle and check whether the door unlocks immediately
- 2With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check that the wire between the KVM and the handle switch has no open circuit and no connection to ground (the body)
- 3Make sure the ground point for the door control module is firmly fixed and free from oxidation, and that the ground wire between the handle and the door module is intact
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: pull the handle out and check that the handle switch value in live data shows activated
- 5Have a workshop replace the door handle if no other fault is found
Symptoms you may notice1
- The door unlocks with a delay
What the fault can affect1
- The keyless vehicle module (KVM) does not send the unlock signal to the central locking straight away when the handle is pulled
