KVM-E001
VOLVO
KVM-E001 - Control module communication. Faulty communication
System
Keyless Vehicle Module (KVM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C30 Electric (2011–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The code is set when the control module detects a serious disturbance on the CAN network, the car's internal communication bus, so that communication is blocked. The module can then not be reached, and keyless operation or the remote control may be affected.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the control module
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the codes, clear them and road test the car to see whether the code comes back
- 2Check that the battery is in good condition and that its terminals are tight
- 3Look for chafed, pinched or damaged CAN wires in the visible parts of the wiring harness, especially where it runs near sharp edges or moving parts
- 4Check the connectors on the control modules in the CAN network for oxidation and loose connections
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment measure the resistance in the CAN network and find which module is disturbing communication
- 6Leave the central electronic module (CEM) in place when the only problem is on the CAN network; swap it only if troubleshooting proves an internal fault in it
Symptoms you may notice2
- No, or reduced, keyless function
- The remote control cannot be used
What the fault can affect2
- The control module switches itself off (so-called bus-off)
- It stays off until its power supply is cut, and it tries to communicate again when power is restored
