Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
9 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The control module monitors MS-CAN, the medium-speed communication bus that control modules use to exchange information. The code is set when another control module on the network disturbs communication, or when the module's own messages cause interference. The code does not say which type of fault it is, so troubleshooting has to proceed step by step.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
- Internal fault in the control module
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in all control modules; when there is a CAN fault, several codes are likely to be present at the same time and they should be troubleshot together
- 2Check the connectors to the control modules on MS-CAN for oxidation and loose connections, and look for chafed or pinched CAN wires in the visible parts of the wiring harness
- 3If a control module stays in limp-home mode after several ignition cycles, you can disconnect and reconnect the battery negative terminal to restore the control modules
- 4Have a workshop measure the resistance in MS-CAN with diagnostic equipment and disconnect control modules one at a time to see which one is disturbing communication
- 5A control module that communicates faultily has to be replaced, but keep the central electronic module (CEM) in place unless troubleshooting points to a fault inside it
- 6Clear the codes, road test the car and check that the code is not set again
Symptoms you may notice2
- No keyless function
- The remote control cannot be used
What the fault can affect2
- The control module switches itself off (so-called bus-off)
- It stays off until its power supply is cut, and it tries to communicate again when power is restored
