What does this fault code mean?

The keyless vehicle module (KVM) receives the information it needs from the central electronic module (CEM) continuously over CAN communication. When the signal from the CEM stops and communication between them is interrupted, the code is set. The fault may lie in the CAN network, in the sending module, or in a module having been replaced without new software being loaded.

    Possible causes

    • The CEM is no longer transmitting the signal that the keyless module expects
    • Open circuit in one or both CAN wires in part of the network
    • Short circuit between the CAN wires
    • Short circuit between one of the CAN wires and ground or supply voltage
    • Incorrect signal configuration in the control module that set the code, for example after a control module was replaced without new software being loaded

    What you can do

    1. 1Read the codes in all control modules; if several show communication faults, start troubleshooting in the central electronic module (CEM)
    2. 2Check the wiring in the CAN network for damage, chafing and loose or corroded connectors
    3. 3Clear the code and road test the car to see whether it comes back
    4. 4If the code is only stored in the control module that set it, have a workshop download and program the latest software
    5. 5Have a workshop measure the resistance in MS-CAN with the central electronic module disconnected to find where the open circuits or short circuits are
    6. 6Do not replace the central electronic module (CEM) because of a CAN fault unless troubleshooting shows it has an internal fault

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • Locking, unlocking and central locking do not work

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
