Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
9 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The parking brake module (PBM) sends and receives information over CAN, a standardized serial communication network between the vehicle's control modules. The fault code is stored when communication on the network is disturbed, either by another control module or by the module's own messages disturbing the network. Because the module cannot communicate during such a fault, the fault code can only be read out when the fault is intermittent.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Break in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
- Internal fault in the parking brake control module
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code and clear it, then check after a while whether it comes back
- 2Look along the wiring and connectors to the parking brake control module for chafed spots, loose connectors and damage
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: check whether more control modules have communication faults, since several fault codes often go together in CAN faults
- 4If the communication fault remains, have a workshop trace it in the CAN network; do not replace the central electronic module (CEM) unless the workshop has confirmed an internal fault in it
- 5The parking brake is a safety function: have a workshop check it if it does not work as it should
Symptoms you may notice3
- Information lamp is on
- Message in the text display
- Electric parking brake works with reduced function
What the fault can affect2
- The parking brake control module works with limited function in emergency mode
- The control module still responds to diagnostic commands while the fault code is stored
