PBM-U040168 - Invalid Data Received From Engine control module. Algorithm Based Failures. Event information
System

Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
9 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The parking brake module (PBM) continuously receives information from the engine control module (ECM) over the CAN bus and checks how good that information is. The fault code is stored when the engine control module reports a lower quality of information than the parking brake module accepts.
Possible causes
- Fault in the engine control module (ECM), which sends the incorrect information
What you can do
- 1Read the fault code, clear it and test drive the car using the parking brake to see whether it returns
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fault codes in the engine control module (ECM) and see whether they are related to this fault
- 3Check the connectors at the parking brake control module for oxidation and looseness
- 4If the fault returns, have a workshop troubleshoot the engine control module (ECM) and check that the correct software is in it
- 5The parking brake is a safety function: have a workshop check it if it does not work as it should
Symptoms you may notice2
- Message in the text display
- Electric parking brake does not release automatically when the car is about to drive off
