What does this fault code mean?
The control modules in the car send and receive information over CAN, a standardised serial communication method. The module has registered a serious interference that blocks the CAN communication, and the code is set as a result.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the control module
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Start the car and let it run for a while, then clear the code and check whether it comes back
- 2If you have diagnostic equipment, read the codes in the central electronic module (CEM), as they can show which control module is not responding
- 3Disconnect the battery negative terminal and use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no contact with ground or voltage and no open circuit
- 4If other control modules have become stuck in a limited mode: disconnect the battery negative terminal for a while and then reconnect it
- 5Have a workshop disconnect some control modules from the CAN network to find where the fault is; replace a control module that communicates incorrectly and repair the wiring as needed
Symptoms you may notice3
- The driver-side switch panel does not work
- Automatic window closing does not work
- The car cannot be operated with the remote control
What the fault can affect2
- The control module shuts itself off (“bus-off”)
- The control module stays off until the power supply is cut, and it tries to communicate again when the power is reconnected
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
