What does this fault code mean?
The control modules send and receive information over CAN, a standardised serial communication method. The module has registered that communication on the MS-CAN network is disturbed, either by another control module on the network or by the module's own messages causing interference. The code is set when the module's CAN communication starts.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
- Internal fault in the control module
What you can do
- 1Start the car and let it run for a while, then clear the code and check whether it comes back
- 2If you have diagnostic equipment, read the other codes in the car first, as they often show which part of the CAN network is affected
- 3Check the fuses in the fuse box and make sure they are intact
- 4Disconnect the battery negative terminal and use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no contact with ground or voltage and no open circuit
- 5Have a workshop look for the control module that disturbs communication and replace it if it is faulty; do not replace the central electronic module (CEM) before it has been checked
Symptoms you may notice3
- The door mirror memory function does not work
- The electric window does not work
- Outer mirror adjustment does not work
What the fault can affect2
- The control module shuts itself off (“bus-off”)
- The control module stays off until the power supply is cut, and it tries to communicate again when the power is reconnected
