Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsS60 (2011–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–)
What does this fault code mean?
The control modules in the car communicate with each other over CAN, a standardised serial communication method. The module has registered that communication with the driver information module (instrument cluster) is disturbed or missing, and the code is set as a result. The code points to a fault in communication across the network rather than in a single module.
Possible causes
- The driver information module has no power supply
- The ground wire to the driver information module is open
- Open circuit or short circuit in the CAN wiring
- Contact resistance, oxidation or poor contact in the connections
- The driver information module or another module is not meant for this car, such as a second-hand unit with other software or hardware
- Several codes for communication faults in the central electronic module (CEM) point to a common fault in the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then start the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the fuses in the fuse box and make sure they are intact
- 3If you have diagnostic equipment, read the codes in the central electronic module (CEM) first, as they show whether more parts of the network are affected
- 4Check that the connectors at the instrument cluster and the earth point behind it are secure and free from moisture and oxidation
- 5Have a workshop measure and trace the CAN wiring; do not replace any control module unless tracing shows that it is damaged
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
