What does this fault code mean?

The telephone module (PHM) follows the microphone signal from the handset. The fault is stored when that signal is short-circuited to supply voltage or has an open circuit, which means the other party cannot hear you when you speak on the handset. The fault lies in the cable from the handset to the control module.

    Possible causes

    • The microphone signal cable from the handset to the control module has an open circuit
    • The microphone signal cable from the handset to the control module is short-circuited to supply voltage

    What you can do

    1. 1Start with the fuses in the fuse box. Their locations are shown in the owner's manual or on the cover of the box
    2. 2Look for breaks in the cable between the handset and the car, especially where it bends when the handset is hung up
    3. 3With a multimeter you can see whether the cable has contact with supply voltage (positive). If you are not used to electrical work, leave this to a workshop
    4. 4Clear the code and try the handset again. If the fault returns, a workshop should check the cable

    Symptoms you may notice4

    • The handset does not work
    • The other party cannot hear you on the privacy handset, sometimes or all the time
    • Amber warning symbol and text message in the display
    • Message in the text display, on cars with Volvo On Call

    What the fault can affect1

    • Only hands-free operates

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
