Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
6 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C30 Electric (2011–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The control modules in the car communicate with each other over the CAN network. The telephone module (PHM) registers a serious disturbance on the low-speed network, where CAN communication is blocked and the telephone module cannot be reached. The fault is linked to a software or communication error in the network.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Break in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the telephone module (PHM)
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1If you have diagnostic equipment, read the fault codes in the central electronics control module (CEM) and first trace any code about lost communication
- 2Check that the connectors at the telephone module and the central electronics control module are firmly seated and free from corrosion
- 3If one control module disturbs communication, others can be stuck in limp-home mode. Lift the negative battery terminal for a while and reconnect it to reset them
- 4If the fault remains, have a workshop measure the resistance of the CAN wires and check whether any of them is short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- 5A control module that communicates faultily must be replaced, but only after the workshop has traced the fault
Symptoms you may notice5
- The phone does not work
- The menu system and the steering-wheel phone controls do not work
- The keypad lighting on the phone does not work
- The radio phone mute does not work
- No function or reduced function on the phone or for Volvo On Call
What the fault can affect2
- The control module switches itself off (bus-off)
- The control module stays switched off until the power supply is broken, and tries to communicate again when power is applied
