Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsS60 (2011–), V40 (2013–), V40 Cross Country (2013–), V60 (2011–)
What does this fault code mean?
The power steering control module (PSCM) has not received the correct configuration ID from the central electronic module (CEM) on the CAN network. This may mean the unit does not belong to this particular car, for example if it is used and has other software or hardware. The fault may also lie in the wiring or in another control module.
Possible causes
- Wrong configuration ID; the unit is meant for another car, for example a used one with different software or hardware
- Short circuit between the CAN wiring
- Open circuit in the CAN wiring
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
- Internal fault in the control module
What you can do
- 1Has the power steering control module been swapped for a used one? If so, it needs the correct software for the car
- 2Clear the fault code and test drive to see whether it returns
- 3Check that the connectors at the control module are firmly seated and free from oxidation
- 4Have a workshop reprogram the control module with the correct software for the car
- 5Safety note: steering is safety-critical, so have a workshop carry out the check and the programming
Symptoms you may notice2
- Text window with warning symbol and text message
- Other steering or handling problems
What the fault can affect3
- The control module shuts itself off ("bus-off")
- It remains shut off until its power is interrupted
- When power is reconnected, the control module tries to communicate again
