What does this fault code mean?

The power steering control module receives vehicle speed information from the brake control module (BCM) over CAN. The fault is stored when that information is judged incorrect or unreasonable for a longer period. The cause normally lies in the module that sends the signal, not in the power steering itself.

    Possible causes

    • Fault in the brake control module (BCM) sending incorrect speed information

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and note the fault codes in all control modules, as this code normally follows from a fault in another module
    2. 2If you have a diagnostic tool: read the speed value from the brake control module in live data during a road test and check that it follows the car's speed smoothly
    3. 3Repair the root fault in the module that sends the signal, and clear this code only after the root fault's code has been cleared
    4. 4If the fault remains after this, have a workshop check the brake control module
    5. 5Steering is a safety system: avoid long drives with abnormal steering and have a workshop check the car

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • Steering feels abnormally light at high speed
    • Steering feels abnormally sluggish at low speed
    • Other steering or handling problems can be felt

    What the fault can affect1

    • The control module uses a default speed value instead of the real signal

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
