REM-4A31
VOLVO
REM-4A31 - Fuel level sensor. Faulty signal. Intermittent fault
System
Rear Electronic Module (REM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsS60 (2001–2009), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (2000–2008), V70 XC / XC70 (2001–2007), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The code relates to the fuel level sensor in the left half of the tank. With the engine running, the control module registers that there is fuel in that half but that the level does not change, and the code is set. The fault is intermittent, meaning it has occurred before but may not be present now. The fuel gauge does not work properly, and the trip computer may show the tank as empty too early.
Possible causes
- Faulty fuel level sensor in the left half of the tank
What you can do
- 1Clear the fault code and drive the car for a while, and note whether it comes back
- 2Check the connectors at the fuel level sensor and at the rear electronic module (REM) for loose contacts and corrosion
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the left tank half fuel level in live data with the engine running and check that the value changes as fuel is used
- 4If the fault returns, have a workshop check the sensor and the wiring further
Symptoms you may notice2
- The trip computer shows the tank as empty too early
- The fuel gauge does not work
What the fault can affect1
- The control module counts the fuel level as zero
