REM-4A33
VOLVO
REM-4A33 - Fuel level sensor. Signal too high or Signal missing. Intermittent fault
System
Rear Electronic Module (REM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsS60 (2001–2009), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (2000–2008), V70 XC / XC70 (2001–2007), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The code concerns the left fuel level sensor, which has either an open circuit or a short to battery voltage. The signal from the sensor is then either missing or too high. The fault is intermittent, meaning it has occurred before but may not be present now. The fuel gauge then has no function.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the left fuel level sensor
- The left fuel level sensor is shorted to battery voltage
What you can do
- 1Clear the fault code and drive the car for a while, and note whether it comes back
- 2Check the connectors at the left fuel level sensor and at the rear electronic module for looseness, corrosion and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wire to the left fuel level sensor has no contact with positive or ground
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the left tank half level in live data and check whether it changes as fuel is used
- 5If the fault returns, have a workshop trace the wires between the left and right fuel level sensors
Symptoms you may notice2
- The trip computer shows the tank as empty too early
- The fuel gauge has no function
What the fault can affect1
- The control module counts the fuel level as zero
