VOLVO
REM-4A34 - Fuel level sensor. Signal too low. Intermittent fault
System

Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsS60 (2001–2009), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (2000–2008), V70 XC / XC70 (2001–2007), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The code concerns the signal from the left fuel level sensor, which reads too low. The cause is that the sensor is shorted to ground. The fault is intermittent, meaning it has occurred before but may not be present now. The fuel gauge then does not work, and the trip computer may show the tank as empty too early.
Possible causes
- Left fuel level sensor is shorted to ground
What you can do
- 1Clear the fault code and test drive the car with fuel in the tank to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the connectors to the left fuel level sensor are secure and free from corrosion
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wire to the left fuel level sensor has no contact with ground
- 4If the fault returns, have a workshop trace the sensor and the wiring further
Symptoms you may notice2
- The trip computer shows the tank empty too early
- The fuel gauge does not work
What the fault can affect1
- The fuel level is set to zero in the control module
