VOLVO
REM-4A38 - Fuel level sensor. Signal too low. Intermittent fault
System
Rear Electronic Module (REM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsS60 (2001–2009), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (2000–2008), V70 XC / XC70 (2001–2007), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The code concerns the sensor in the right half of the tank, which is shorted to ground so that the signal becomes too low. The fault is intermittent, meaning it has occurred before but may not be present now. The fuel gauge then does not work, and the trip computer may show the tank as empty too early.
Possible causes
- The sensor in the right half of the tank is shorted to ground
What you can do
- 1Clear the fault code and test drive the car; if it does not come back there is nothing more to do
- 2Check the connectors at the sensor in the right half of the tank for chafing, loose contacts and corrosion
- 3Look for chafing on the wire to the right-side sensor, since a damaged wire can cause a temporary short to ground
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wire to the right-side sensor has no contact with ground (the body)
- 5If the fault returns, have a workshop check the sensor and the wiring further
Symptoms you may notice2
- The trip computer reports the tank as empty too early
- The fuel gauge does not work
What the fault can affect1
- The control module sets the fuel level to zero
