REM-4A40
VOLVO
REM-4A40 - Gas temperature sensor. Signal too high
System
Rear Electronic Module (REM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsS60 (2001–2009), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (2000–2008), V70 XC / XC70 (2001–2007), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The rear electronic module (REM) monitors the signal from the gas temperature sensor. If the signal becomes too high, for example because the signal wire is shorted to supply voltage, the code is stored. The fault can affect the fuel level reading, so the gauge may read zero while fuel is still in the tank.
Possible causes
- Short circuit to supply voltage in the signal wire
- Break in the signal wire
- Defective gas temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Note the fault code, clear it and test drive the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the connector to the gas temperature sensor for oxidation and damage
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire from the gas temperature sensor is not shorted to supply voltage
- 4If the fault remains, have a workshop replace the gas temperature sensor and check the wiring
Symptoms you may notice4
- The fuel level gauge does not work
- The trip computer shows an empty tank too early
- The fuel gauge drops to zero although there is fuel in the tank
- The gas level gauge does not work
What the fault can affect1
- The fuel level is set to zero
