REM-E003
VOLVO
REM-E003 - Configuration fault. Faulty configuration
System
Rear Electronic Module (REM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsS60 (2001–2009), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (2000–2008), V70 XC / XC70 (2001–2007), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The rear electronic module (REM) checks its own configuration ID against the signal configuration that the central electronic module (CEM) sends out on the CAN network. If they do not match, or if communication between the REM and the CEM is or has been interrupted, the code is set. With an open circuit in both CAN wires, the REM only answers the diagnostic tool and normal CAN communication stops, which is known as expulsion mode.
Possible causes
- Incorrect CAN configuration ID: the module is not meant for this vehicle, such as a used unit with different software or hardware
- Open circuit in the CAN wiring between the REM and the CEM
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the central electronic module (CEM) and deal with any codes for lost communication first
- 2With the negative battery lead disconnected, use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires between the REM and the CEM have no open circuit
- 3Check the connectors at the REM and the CEM for contact resistance and oxidation, and see whether they are fully seated
- 4If the wires are intact and the fault remains, a used control module with the wrong configuration may be the cause; have a workshop check the REM configuration
Symptoms you may notice5
- Rear doors and the fuel filler cap do not lock or unlock
- Retractable headrest does not work
- Rear window heating does not work
- The fuel gauge shows zero
- The tail lamps do not work
