What does this fault code mean?
The road traffic information control module (RTI) communicates with the other control modules over the CAN network. The code is set when the RTI registers serious interference in CAN communication, and several functions tied to the RTI and the steering wheel are then affected.
Possible causes
- Short-circuit in the CAN wiring
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the RTI
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Check whether the central electronic module (CEM) has codes for lost communication, and deal with those first
- 2With diagnostic equipment, see which control modules respond on the network and note which ones do not
- 3Disconnect the battery negative lead and use a multimeter to check whether the CAN wires are shorted to ground or voltage, or have an open circuit
- 4Check the connectors at the RTI and along the CAN network for oxidation and looseness
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment identify which control module is disturbing the network, and do not replace any module until the fault has been located
Symptoms you may notice5
- The display for the RTI does not work
- The display does not deploy
- The map shows the car in the wrong place
- The buttons on the steering wheel do not work
- Traffic information is not shown or not updated
What the fault can affect2
- The RTI disconnects itself from the CAN network (bus-off) and stays off until the power has been cut
- When power is reconnected, the RTI tries to communicate again
