What does this fault code mean?

The steering angle sensor (SAS) is reporting a steering angle larger than the wheel can physically be turned. This almost always means the sensor or the clock spring has been fitted one turn out or is incorrectly adjusted. The other systems are then told that the steering angle cannot be trusted.

    Possible causes

    • The steering angle sensor is misadjusted, for example after a wheel alignment or steering work
    • The sensor or clock spring has been fitted one turn out
    • Damaged steering angle sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Find out whether the steering wheel, steering wheel airbag, clock spring or steering has recently been removed or serviced
    2. 2Have a workshop check that the steering angle reads zero with the wheels straight ahead and calibrate the sensor
    3. 3If the sensor was fitted one turn out, the clock spring may have been damaged at full lock and need replacing
    4. 4Drive carefully, as the stability systems are not working

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • Yellow warning symbol and message in the display
    • Traction and stability control do not work
    • The active chassis does not work

    What the fault can affect1

    • The module tells the other systems that the steering angle is invalid, and the functions that need it are disabled

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
