Steering Angle Sensor (SAS)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsS60 (2001–2009), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (2000–2008), V70 XC / XC70 (2001–2007), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The steering angle sensor (SAS) sends and receives information over the CAN network. The code is set when serious interference blocks CAN communication. The control module then shuts itself off from the network and stays off until the power has been cut.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between the CAN wires.
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires.
- Internal fault in the steering angle sensor (SAS).
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network.
What you can do
- 1Check that the battery terminals and cables are tight and clean.
- 2If the anti-spin warning lamp stays lit after the battery check, have a workshop read the fault codes and measure the CAN wiring.
- 3Have a workshop check the CAN wiring for short circuits and open circuits, and replace the wiring if needed.
- 4The angle sensor is connected to the stability system. Have a workshop carry out the fault tracing and repair rather than working in the steering system yourself.
Symptoms you may notice2
- The anti-spin warning lamp lights up
- The stability function does not work
What the fault can affect2
- The sensor shuts itself off from the CAN network (bus-off)
- It tries to communicate again when the power is switched on
