Steering Angle Sensor (SAS)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsS60 (2001–2009), S80 (1999–2006), V70 (2000–2008), V70 XC / XC70 (2001–2007), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The steering angle sensor checks its configuration ID against the signal setup that the central electronic module (CEM) transmits over CAN. The code is set when the two disagree, or when the link to the CEM is cut. Ordinary CAN traffic then stops, although the sensor still answers diagnostic requests.
Possible causes
- Wrong CAN configuration ID because the unit is meant for another vehicle, such as a used unit with different software or hardware.
- Open circuit in the CAN cabling linking the unit to the central electronic module (CEM).
What you can do
- 1Check that the steering wheel module or angle sensor is intended for your car. A used part from another car can cause this code.
- 2Check that the connectors are firmly seated and not corroded, and have a workshop measure the wiring.
- 3If no other fault is found, a workshop can load new software into the angle sensor, but only after agreeing it with you.
- 4The angle sensor is part of the stability system. Have a workshop carry out the fault tracing and any software loading rather than working on the steering wheel yourself.
Symptoms you may notice4
- The anti-spin warning lamp lights up on cars of model year 2002 and earlier
- The general warning lamp lights up on cars of model year 2003 and later
- The stability function does not work
- A message appears in the text display
What the fault can affect1
- The sensor cannot communicate normally on the CAN network
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
