What does this fault code mean?

Bus-off means the steering angle sensor (SAS) disconnects itself from the CAN bus. This happens when serious interference on the high speed network blocks communication. The cause may be a short or open circuit in the CAN wiring, or an internal fault in the sensor or in another control module on the same part of the network.

    Possible causes

    • Short circuit between the CAN wires.
    • Open circuit in one or both CAN wires.
    • Internal fault in the steering angle sensor (SAS).
    • Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network.

    What you can do

    1. 1If you have recently disconnected connectors or replaced parts on the car, check that the connectors are firmly seated and correctly connected.
    2. 2Clear the code, start the engine and check whether it returns.
    3. 3Have a workshop measure the CAN wiring, since this needs measuring equipment and knowledge of the network.
    4. 4The angle sensor is connected to the anti-spin and stability systems. Have a workshop carry out the repair rather than working on the steering wheel yourself.

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • A yellow warning symbol and text message show in the display
    • The anti-spin and anti-skid warning lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
    • The anti-spin function does not work
    • The stability function does not work
    • The active chassis does not work

    What the fault can affect1

    • The sensor disconnects itself from the CAN bus

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
