Applies to the following models:

Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The airbag control module normally receives continuous information from the engine control module (ECM) over CAN. If communication with the engine control module stops, the code is set. The fault may come from open-circuits or short-circuits on the CAN wiring, or from an incorrect signal configuration.
Possible causes
- The transmitting control module, here the engine control module (ECM), has stopped sending the signal the airbag module expects
- Intermittent open-circuits or short-circuits on the CAN wiring
- Incorrect signal configuration in the control module, for example after a control module has been replaced without new software being loaded
What you can do
- 1Read out all fault codes in the car; if codes for lost communication are stored in the central electronic module (CEM), start with those
- 2If the fault seems to come and go, erase the code and see whether it is not set again
- 3Have a workshop check the CAN wiring for open-circuits and for short-circuits to ground or voltage
- 4If a control module has recently been replaced, have a workshop check that it has the correct software, or load the latest software
- 5Do not work on the airbag system yourself; have a workshop carry out all wiring and control module checks
Symptoms you may notice2
- Text message in the display
- The SRS warning light comes on or behaves abnormally
