Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
7 modelsS60 (2011–), S80 (2007–), V60 (2011–), V60 Cross Country (2015–), V70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The SUM has detected faulty communication on the HS-CAN, the car's high-speed data network that the control modules use to exchange information. The fault lies in the network, and the module showing the code is not necessarily the one communicating incorrectly.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- A break in one of the wires in the CAN network
- One of the wires in the CAN network is short-circuited to ground
- One of the wires in the CAN network is short-circuited to voltage
- The wires in the CAN network are short-circuited to each other
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in all control modules and note them, since several communication faults often occur together
- 2Clear the fault codes and road test; some codes only disappear in the next operating cycle, so check again after a while
- 3Check that the relevant fuses are intact; their locations are in the owner's manual
- 4Inspect the connectors and wiring along the CAN network for loose connections, chafing and pinch damage
- 5Has anything recently been done to the car? Tell the workshop if you take it in
- 6Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment measure the resistance and traffic on the CAN network, since the fault may sit in another control module
Symptoms you may notice2
- A message appears in the information display
- The Four-C function does not work
What the fault can affect1
- The Four-C function is switched off
